민주평화통일자문회의(민주평통) 토론토협의회(회장 유건인)가 주최하고 캐나다 한국교육원(원장 장지훈)과 캐나다 온타리오 한국학교협회(회장 신옥연)가 후원한 “2025 해외 청소년 통일 골든벨 퀴즈대회 예선”이 토론토한인회 대강당에서 5월 3일(토)에 개최되었다. 교육분과(강 미해 위원장)를 주축으로 한 20명의 준비위원회가 작년의 성공에 이어 기획한 K-Pop Dance 패자부활전은 참가 학생들에게 더 많은 진출 기회와 문화체험을 제공하였다. 더불어 동심으로 돌아간 방청석 전원 포함 100 명은  Dream Maker’s의 지도 아래 K-Pop Dance를 배우고, 실제 경연을 통해 20명이 상품을 받는 축제의 한마당이었다. 이번 행사도 2024년에 이어 최고의 MC로서 유쾌하고 품격 있는 진행을 박영석과 이보경(Monica) 위원님의 한영 이중언어 사회로 진행했다.
이 대회는 민주평통이 해외의 한인과 비한인 청소년들에게 대한민국의 통일에 대하여 인식을 갖게 하고 통일 공감대를 확산하고자 매년 개최하고 있다.
대회 참가자격은 중·고등학생(G7 ~ G12학년)이며, 이번 대회에는 한인 학생 38명, 비한인 학생 4명 등 총 42명이 등록하였으며, 오타와의 조윤설(G7) 학생과 헤밀턴에 거주하는 정다윤(G8), 베리의 신율(G10, 최우수상)과 이정은(G10, 장려상) 학생 등 멀리 지방에서도 참가를 하고, 필리핀 커뮤니티의 학생들도 참가를 하였다.
특히, 필리핀 커뮤니티의 Melinda 여사는 내년 대회부터는 필리핀 커뮤니티의 학생들이 파트너십으로 참가하겠다고 밝혀 이 대회가 외국인 청소년들에게 한국을 알리는 데 기여하고 있다고 대회 관계자는 말했다.
이번 대회의 성적 우수자들에게는 상장과 부상으로 상금이 지급되었는데 최우수상 1명에게는 상금 300달러, 우수상 1명에게는 상금 200달러, 장려상 3명에게는 상금 각 100달러가 지급되었으며, 참가자 전원에게는 민주평통이 마련한 푸짐한 상품과 평화통일대사 참여 인증서가 발급되었다.
괄목할 성과로는 최초로 토론토협의회에서 다국적 학생, 클로즈 민우 (영국, 한국 부모) 군의 쾌보가 전해졌다. 2박 3일 한국 방문 기회를 얻게 된 학생은 최우수상 수상자인 신율 학생과 장려상 수상자인 공유하 군이다. 이날 우수상을 차지한 오세영(11학년) 군은 지난해 최우수상을 수상해 한국을 방문한 바 있어, 대회 규정에 따라 이번에는 장려상을 수상한 공유하 군이 본선에 출전하게 됐다.

The 2025 Golden Bell for Unification was held on Saturday, May 3, at the Korean Canadian Cultural Association. The event was hosted by the Toronto Chapter of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council (PUAC) (Chair: Kenneth Yoo), and sponsored by the Korean Education Affairs Section (Director: Jihoon Jang) and the Korean Canadian Schools Association (President: Ok-Yun Shin).

The 2025 Golden Bell for Unification Preparation Committee, led by Chair, Grace Kangmeehae Lee and composed of 20 members, organized this year’s event, including the return of the K-Pop Dance for a Second-Chance Round, which had been a success in the previous year. It provided students not only with additional chances to advance but also with a valuable cultural experience. In addition, all 100 audience members, who joyfully returned to their childhood spirit, learned K-Pop dance under the guidance of Dream Maker’s and participated in a live competition where 20 were awarded prizes—making it a true celebration.

Like in 2024, the event was hosted by outstanding bilingual emcees Young Suk Park and Monica Lee, who brought both charm and professionalism to the stage in Korean and English.

This annual competition aims to increase awareness and build consensus around Korean unification among both Korean and non-Korean youth living abroad.

Eligibility was open to Grades 7–12. A total of 42 students registered, including 38 Korean and 4 non-Korean participants. Students traveled from cities such as Ottawa (Yunsle Cho, G7), Hamilton (Dayun Jeong, G8), and Barrie (Youl Shin, G10, Grand Prize; Jeongeun Lee, G10, Encouragement Award). Students from the Filipino community also participated.

In particular, Mrs. Melinda from the Filipino community expressed her desire to formally partner in next year’s competition by encouraging Filipino students to participate, noting that the event contributes to raising awareness of Korea among international youth.

Top-performing students received certificates and cash prizes:

Grand Prize: Youl Shin (G10) – $300
Excellence Award: Seyoung Oh (G11) – $200
Encouragement Award: Yoohah Kong (G7), Jeongeun Lee (G10), Minoo Close (G8) – $100 each
All participants received generous gifts and a 2025 Golden Bell for Unification Youth Delegate Certificate provided by PUAC.

A noteworthy achievement was the remarkable success of Minoo Close—a multinational student, a child of a British father and Korean mother—who, for the first time, represented such a background at the Toronto Chapter.

The students selected to receive a 3-day, 2-night invitation to Korea are Grand Prize winner Youl Shin and Encouragement Award recipient Yoohah Kong.

On the day of the event, Seyoung Oh (Grade 11) was awarded the Excellence Prize, but as he had already visited Korea last year as the Grand Prize winner, Yoohah Kong, who received an Encouragement Award this year, will advance to the finals in accordance with the competition rules. Young Suk
